Video for The Wall Street Journal & Vanity Fair

Here are some of my favorite videos I’ve created.

WSJ: Dow Cow

“You may be familiar with what the Dow Jones Industrial Average looks like. But what does it sound like?” -What 123 Years of the Dow Jones Industrial Average Sound Like

I spent a month working on this animated video, which was a part of a larger editorial package celebrating 130 years of WSJ; the stories were largely historical but I was tasked to help create the piece that would speak to how WSJ hopes to shape storytelling in the future. Our Research and Development (R&D) engineer digitally composed a song based off the Dow Jones Industrial Average’s annual fluctuations. I illustrated and animated “Dow Cow” to visualize the data. The video-game animation style features a cow navigating a world of obstacles while the background flips to monochrome every time we hit a year with a recession.

WSJ: AI Personality Predictions

“We asked guests at WSJ's Future of Everything Festival to guess how artificial intelligence would describe them, based on an IBM Watson AI program that analyzed their published essays, speeches, interviews and song lyrics. Then we showed them the results.” -What Happens When AI Tries to Predict Your Personality?

I used artificial intelligence to try to predict the individual personalities of the Future Of Everything Festival’s most notable guests, such as Jonathan Van Ness, Antoni Porowski, and Imogen Heap. I wrote questions for the interview subjects based off AI profiles collected by WSJ’s R&D team. I conducted most of the interviews and then took the edited footage and repurposed it for Instagram Stories. I also created original graphics for the social video.

VF: Vanities Covers

The monthly Vanity Fair Vanities cover profiles the youngest, buzziest talent taking Hollywood by a storm. Through exclusive BTS video, the brand’s website and social media audience get to see all the looks and moments from the star’s shoot.

I’ve edited the BTS video for several of these covers, with stars ranging from Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All At Once), Thuso Mbedu (Woman King), Noah Centineo (To All The Boys I’ve Ever Loved) and others.

WSJ: Living on $45K in the U.S.

“How far does the average entry-level salary go? It depends a lot on where you live.” -Starting Out

For this social video, I asked three young workers from all across the U.S. to film a day in each of their lives. Each subject filmed their commute, home, and what their typical Friday night looks like in each of their cities. It was the first video produced using only user-generated content at the Wall Street Journal. I also designed the animations for the video.

VF: Oscars Party

“For more than 25 years, Vanity Fair has invited Oscar winners and nominees to mix with Hollywood’s most dynamic stars for an intimate celebration immediately following the Academy Awards. It’s the must-attend destination for the industry’s top talent.” -Watch the Vanity Fair Oscar Party 2023 Livestream

Leading up to the event, TikTok’s #Oscars page was almost entirely filled with Vanity Fair videos, which I led the strategy for.

I was also an on-site producer who helped to live-edit assets for the livestream as well as our social media platforms. On TikTok alone, we garnered 31.5M views. I also produced and directed creative for our pre-Oscars live tape, which can be seen interstitially in Vanity Fair’s YouTube live.

VF: Fan Theories

What do fans think is going to happen next season? More importantly, how does the cast feel about their theories?

For this series, we asked the stars of White Lotus (Haley Lu Richardson), Yellowjackets, and You (Penn Badgley) and more to read and respond to a few of the internet’s theories. I produced and wrote the creative (selecting the theories, providing follow up questions) for this series.

WSJ: How Many Americans Can Work From Home?

“The government says less than 10% of employees have a flexible workplace, but experts say the data haven’t kept up with the trend. Here’s a look at the numbers.” -As Businesses Shut, How Many U.S. Workers Can Work From Home?

I animated pre-existing static charts to better tell this visually-driven story for our audience off-platform. I created the illustrations for this video.

WSJ: How Are Hearing Aids Getting Smarter?

“Medical devices and consumer electronics are converging to create a new generation of hearing aids.” -Hearing Aids Are Getting Smarter

I used pre-existing audio samples to create a waveform-driven video to visualize how hearing aids have improved from 1992 to 2019. I created the illustrations for this video.
